Beyond the Headlines: Lecture to offer helpful tips for truth-starved digital age

探花直播 School of Theology invites the community to step out of the digital whirlwind and into a vital conversation on wisdom and media literacy.
As part of its Lifelong Learning series, the university will host the Christian Otto and Dorothy Pfohl Weber Lecture, titled 鈥淏eyond the Headlines: A Ministry Leader鈥檚 Guide to Media Discernment.鈥
The program is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at the Bahnson Center Saal at 探花直播, 60 West Locust Street, Bethlehem. The free program will also be available via Zoom.
The panel discussion will bridge the gap between the pulpit, the pew, and the press, offering a rare opportunity to gain useful tools for navigating today鈥檚 complex media landscape with the right approach and a grounded heart.
鈥淚n an age of rapid-fire information, the ability to discern truth and maintain a grounded pastoral presence is more vital than ever,鈥 says Rev. Dr. Lindsey Scott, Director of Strategic Programs, Lifelong Learning, and Doctor of Ministry Program. 鈥淭his lecture isn鈥檛 just about media literacy, it鈥檚 about how we, as people of faith, bear witness to the truth in our daily lives and leadership.鈥
The discussion features a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including:
Dr. Brian Kaylor: Editor-in-Chief of Word&Way (a Christian media outlet) and Baptist minister, providing insights on religious literacy and navigating news during crises.
Dr. Belinda Waller-Peterson: Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence at 探花直播 and Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of English and Writing Arts, offering a unique lens on healing narratives and health humanities.
Dr. Jill Irvine: Professor Emeritus in the Department of International and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma and current MDiv student at the School of Theology, bringing high-level expertise in political science and social justice.
Dr. Erik Ranstrom: Assistant Professor of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care at the School of Theology, providing the theological and practical ministry framework for the dialogue.
